Name: Scorch
Secret Identity (if any): UNKNOWNDamian Daumer
Age: 38
Affiliation: Villains
Base of Operations (if any): Largely North America, though he will travel anywhere he is called to if it means a paycheck.
Appearance: Scorch stands at an imposing 6’6”, and his body is toned and lean from Scorch’s boxing. His hair is a dark brown, almost black, with a white streak just behind his right ear to the top of his neck, which manifested itself after his time in the clinical trials. His jaw is squared and usually bears a very short beard or at least a 5 o’clock shadow. His eyes are a piercing blue and his gaze is often cold and distant, though he becomes noticeably excited by the prospect of having to use his powers. His body bears a remarkable amount of scarring everywhere save for his face, thanks to the medical trials he was put through.
Scorch has no costume, per say, though he usually can be found in grey or dark blue jeans, a black or grey v-neck t-shirt, along with a hoodie and a distressed leather jacket. He wears the same pair of leather boots every single day - the only ones he owns. He does have a skin-tight black suit that is resistant to fire that he has worn in the past, but he only wears his under his clothes if he believes he’s going to get into a fight that might require him to “light up,” as he calls it (aka envelop himself in flames, thus ruining whatever clothing he wears).
Powers: Pyrokinesis with immunity to high heat and fire.
Pyrokinesis: Scorch has the ability to create and manipulate fire with his mind. Technically, this is the psychic ability to manipulate and speed up the atomic state to the point of combustion. His flame burns blue to blueish white, which indicates it burns hotter than typical flame. The full range of his ability to create and manipulate fire is unknown, though he has displayed the ability to create fireballs, direct streams of flame, and to coat his limbs in flame. If a source of flame is already present, Scorch can also manipulate this and use the inherent energy to make his fire larger.
Scorch has been honing these abilities for over ten years now, and has extreme control over his ability to manipulate flame and create fire. However, in order to create a flame, the area he is in needs to have oxygen to burn, and he needs to be able to see where he wants to generate the flame. It also seems that he needs to be able to see and move his hands in order to manipulate and direct the flames; while he could still technically create the flames by combusting visible atoms, there’s no way for him to ensure the kind of accuracy he gets otherwise.
Immunity to high heat/fire: Scorch is immune to high heat and flame. At first, it was unclear if he was immune to heat and fire, or if he had some sort of minor regenerative ability that allowed him to endure said stressors, as when his skin came into contact with either it didn’t appear to sustain any damage whatsoever. After subjecting his skin to extreme cold, pressure, and lacerations, though, his time in the clinical trials confirmed his immunities only extended to high heat and flame itself. With that, it also seems that if Scorch is in an enclosed space and uses the majority of the area’s oxygen, others will struggle to breath but he will not, though it it unknown how this occurs. If he is simply in an oxygen-deprived environment without the presence of flame, Scorch will struggle to breath just as others do.
Henchmen (villains only): Scorch is a lone agent, so he doesn’t have any henchmen of his own. However, one could consider him a “henchman for hire” to other villains, as he will usually sell his “services” to the highest bidder.
Personality: An arrogant man with a penchant for angry outbursts, one of the only ways to reign in Scorch’s penchant for being a loose cannon is to pay him enough to do what you want him to. While he doesn’t go out of his way to create havoc, especially after being sent to jail for a time, he has been known to lash out against employers and people who haven’t shown him the respect he feels he deserves. However, he keeps on getting hired because of his ability to get the job done. And though while he's efficient, he’s also terribly brutal, which the man seems to get some sort of sick joy from.
For Scorch, the worst kind of person is one who stands in between him and anything: paycheck, goals, whatever. Scorch is incredibly driven and has an incredible knack for holding grudges, and generally that grudge doesn’t go away until the other person is dead and buried - usually by him. When he’s fought against ‘heroes’ in the past, he likes to play around and test himself, seeing them as the only true people who can match his abilities.
While much of his personality is broken and twisted from his time in the clinical trials, Scorch does have an inkling of humanity left in him, though only for those who have been through terrible situations like himself. He believes virtually everyone beside himself is too entitled; he can’t really empathize or sympathise with other people’s problems. If it doesn’t directly affect him or something he is doing, it doesn’t matter.
The worst part is, Scorch can oftentimes superficially act like a decent guy, though this is usually only for his own personal gains. He has no qualms acting like a decent person towards someone if it gets him something he wants, though it’s usually next to impossible for him to keep up any sort of act like that for long.
Origin Story: Not much is known about Scorch before he started mercenary villain career. The only record of his life before ten years ago is his real name, Damian Daumer, listed as a patient during the early stages of an experimental clinical trial for people diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Scorch remembers nothing of his life before the trial save for his name (though certain people and places will cause him to recall memories he has no recollection of).
Scorch’s memory starts after the experimental trials began, which subjected the twenty-two year old to horrors unimaginable to most. Through a mass of redacted studies and clinical notes from the trial, it was clear that the trial was not looking to cure Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, but instead to use the participants – all of whom has life expectancies of a year or less – as test subjects for awakening recessive genes for superhuman powers, by putting the participants’ bodies and minds through extreme stresses. Unfortunately for Scorch, he remembers every detail and pain that he was put through in said trials.
Months of torture went by before the researchers finally found what they deemed a “mutation” that had manifested in Scorch. After subjecting the man’s skin to flame from a blowtorch, they saw that his body had become immune to fire, as well as high heat (which they learned through further testing and trials). As well, his body had seemingly lost any sign of Cruetzfeldt-Jakob disease - effectively, somehow the trauma had cured his condition. However, what they and Scorch both didn’t realize at the time was that he had also manifested pyrokinesis, something which Scorch realized on his own one evening after the researchers had retired for the night. It was then that the broken man began planning his escape.
While his trials continued as the doctors tried to figure out what caused not only his powers to manifest but also the disease to be cured, Scorch practiced his fire conjuring ability whenever he could, unbeknownst to the doctors running the clinical trial. Until one day, of course, one year after Scorch had begun the trials, when he created enough fire to melt his restraints. Finally free, the man torched as much of the facility as he could before he left, escaping into the night with a new vengeance to sate.
With no recollection of his former life, Scorch sought to do the only thing he could: punish those responsible for taking his life from him. It took the man a few years to do so, but he eventually obtained not only a list of the doctors who headed the trials, but a list of patient names, of which he knew one would be him. Now with his targets, Scorch spent the next five years taking out the doctors one by one, until the only one that was left was the doctor directly assigned to him, a woman named Dr. Karen Ho.
Watching the doctor for months, Scorch finally kidnapped the woman one summer afternoon, bringing her to a warehouse and questioning her about who he was. The doctor identified his name, Damien Daumer, thinking it would get the crazed man to let her go, but when he pressed for more information about who he was and she couldn’t provide it, Scorch burned the woman alive.
Unfortunately for Scorch, his surveillance of Dr. Ho, not to mention her sudden disappearance, went noticed, and police launched a full-scale manhunt for her killer. Eventually Scorch was found because of his error of bringing the doctor to the warehouse he worked out of, and the police were able to apprehend the mutant. After an expedited trial, Scorch was sentenced to life without parole, and he was transported to a maximum security prison in New York.
Scorch spent three years incarcerated, but was able to escape again by literally melting the door off of his cell, killing a slew of guards and escaping with a few other incarcerated mutants who he’d made friends with during his time there. He had planned to find out more about who he had been before the trials, but after a year of no progress and living off of dumpster diving and sleeping on stoops, he reached out to one of his escapee buddies for work. It was then the man began his career as a mercenary, taking illegal jobs that usually involved threatening rival gangs, mobs, or even hits on people who’d worn the criminal underworld’s patience thin.
The mutant quickly became recognized for his brutality and willingness to get the job done, no matter what. Soon, he started being hired by mafia king-pins, high-ranking officials, and even a dictator or two. He doesn’t have any rivalries with any heroes per se, but anyone who stands in the way of completing a job becomes his enemy, no matter what. At this point, he doesn't have any more interest in who he was before the trials: now, he is Scorch.
